Writing Software -- The Big Picture

Do you know someone who is smart, but a poor writer? Do you have a child or student that has difficulty sitting down and writing a well-organized paper? Or do you have a child learning cursive handwriting? A number of programs on the market claim to help students become better writers. SuperKids took a look at some of them, and came away believing that this topic offers potential.

Inspiration Software, Education Edition [ages 9 and up] from Inspiration Software, helps students develop ideas and organize their thinking using webs, outlines and diagrams. Best for older students and adults who want to improve their writing.

Secret Writer's Society [ages 7 to 9] from Panasonic Interactive, teaches the basics, like topic sentences and punctuation. Now that a bug in an early version has been corrected, the program effectively teaches the skills needed for good writing.

The Write Connections [ages 2 to 8] from Children's Choice, focuses on teaching kids the principles of handwriting. This program presents letters, numbers and more in a multimedia, multi-sensory manner, and gives kids plenty of opportunity to practice what they've observed.

Kaplan: Writing and Vocabulary Essential Review [ages 14 to 18] from Encore Software, helps high-school students to improve their composition, English and standardized test skills. This program is best for motivated students who are willing to read a computer screen for several hours and can independently apply large amounts of abstract information to specific assignments.
