Spelling Software -- The Big Picture

SuperKids' reviewers have compared several Spelling Software programs, evaluating their content and design, as well as their kid appeal and ease of use. Our editors approached the task with some curiousity: based on our journalism experience, we had always categorized people as either "good" spellers or "poor" ones. Our question: could software make a difference? Unfortunately, the results of a month-long trial are inadequate to even begin to prove the answer. But if spelling ability can be improved through practice and drills, all of these programs offer plenty.

  • Words Rock! [for ages 4 to 14+] from EdAlive, is a strong drill and test vocabulary/spelling/grammar program, hidden in a modest search game. The educational component will be attractive to parents and teachers, as well as to those students who want to learn or challenge themselves.
  • Curious George Reads, Writes, & Spells [for ages 6 to 8] from Houghton Mifflin Interactive, is a solid spelling practice program, utilizing a familiar character. Best suited for a beginning or early reading child who has begun to sound-out words, and can easily identify letters. Good fine-motor skills are helpful..
  • JumpStart Spelling [for ages 4 to 9] from Knowledge Adventure, provides a limited set of spelling drills, in the context of an adventure story. Best suited for younger users who enjoy repetitive activities.
  • Spelling Blaster [for ages 6 to 9] also from Knowledge Adventure, provides the broadest range of skill development activities. Best suited for video game lovers, or at least those with quick hand-eye coordination.
