Reference Software -- The Big Picture

Reference software is typically designed to provide convenient access to vetted information and tools. When done well, it makes life -- be it homework for students, or 'real' work for adults - a bit easier.

• Microsoft Student 2006 [for ages 12 to adult] from Microsoft, is a collection of factoids, tools and templates designed to bring helpful information on basic high school subjects into a single, easy-to-use interface. Not up to Microsoft's potential.

• Microsoft Bookshelf 98 is an impressive all-purpose reference set. The dictionary, thesaurus, almanac, chronology, and computer dictionary are all excellent; the book of quotations and atlas are significantly weaker. We would recommend it for any student/writer who has the need for more than a couple of the reference books included in this title.

• Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary is a simpler, more focused reference work that provides an excellent dictionary and thesaurus.
