StudyWorks Mathematics Deluxe allows students to learn and practice high-school math in a variety of ways. The program comes with practice problems and solutions that can be accessed on the computer and also includes a companion workbook that has problems and solutions in pre-algebra, algebra 1 and 2, geometry, pre-calculus and calculus. Installing the CD gives a students access to lessons and problems, online tests and games, online homework help, an equation solver, a graphing calculator, a unit convertor, software that can fit functions to large data sets, and an immense range of online tutorials in science and math.

Through this software, teachers can also access tutorials, lesson plans and animations that might help them with their lesson plans. For example, the tutorial on special relativity developed by StudyWorks Mathematics Deluxe uses a series of animations to show that objects contract in length as they move with speeds approaching that of light.

Educational Value

StudyWorks Mathematics Deluxe supports students as they learn high-school level math. The program provides students with opportunities to expand their math knowledge through tutorials and practice problems and check their homework by using the equation solver, graphing calculator and online homework help. Also, through transcribed interviews, the software exposes students to engineers, musicians and robotics specialists who use math as part of their careers.

Unfortunately, students may use the program and online help to solve their homework problems before they have spent sufficient time thinking about assignments themselves. For example, if a student is to graph a function using data, he might enter the material into the computer and copy the graph without designing the axes and carefully plotting the data himself.

Kid Appeal

Parents or teachers may have to support kids as they work through the material provided by StudyWorks Mathematics Deluxe because students may be overwhelmed by the wealth and complexity of material available to them. Parents should help children choose what activities they pursue and work with children to figure out how to use the many tools included in StudyWorks Mathematics Deluxe. The software is a long-term investment because it covers a wide range of math topics. Teachers will gain access to activities, lesson plans, grant opportunities and an online teacher community by using this software.

Ease of Use / Install

StudyWorks Mathematics Deluxe takes a long-time to install because several pieces of software must be co-installed with the main program. But the long-term value of the program may balance out the extended installation time. Using the program requires constant perusal of the manual because kids must learn how to navigate through the program's resource center and online options. Also, the graphing calculator and equation solver require students to enter information in a particular format, which is outlined in the manual.

Best for... / Bottom-Line

StudyWorks Mathematics Deluxe is ideal for students who are interested in improving their math skills and expanding their knowledge of math over several years. Students who try to solve problems on their own before asking for help will most benefit from the equation solver, graphing capacities, and online help included as part of the program. Kids will need be to fairly motivated in math to have the patience to figure out how the program is organized and how its tool bars work. Parents who don't remember (or never learned) how to solve some types of math problems will also appreciate this program.
