interactive book software
The Eency Weency Spider moving picture book is an animated version of the classic story. Beautifully illustrated, and clearly narrated, it is a charming story, well told. Both the DVD and digital download include English narration, English narration plus read-along text, and Spanish narration versions.
Sadly, this implementation is of limited educational value. The lack of interactivity limits the user to watching the pretty pictures, listening to the simple story, and possibly reading along. And the latter is made more difficult by the conflicting pull of watching the animation, or the highlighted text. Lack of Spanish read-along text limits the value as a Spanish language teaching tool. We would rather see this story read in a parent's lap, with a real 'picture book'.
Unlike many interactive storybooks with lots of click and explore options, this program is effectively no different than watching a simple video. User interaction is limited to start/pause/stop. Young children of pre-video game age or exposure may sit through it on their own several times, but our young testers were less than captivated.
Simple - insert the disk, and click on the version you want to see: English narration, English with illuminated subtitles, or Spanish narration.
The Eency Weency Spider and other Moving Picture Book stories in this series, are best suited for use as travel entertainment for young pre-readers. Children at home will be drawn to other more interactive pursuits.
