Encarta Encyclopedia Deluxe 2000
Speech Recognition

The Deluxe version of Encarta 2000 includes Speech Recognition capability. With the addition of an inexpensive microphone, it is possible to search Encarta. But don't throw away your mouse and keyboard.

Although the concept conjurs up visions of HAL in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, or the more prosaic computers in Star Trek, that level of functionality is still just a vision. Here, with studied effort and many, many repetitions, one can painfully make their way through the encyclopedia. But it's slow going, frustrating, and not much fun after the novelty wears off.

The voice control capability can be combined with the read-aloud feature to allow "hands-free" searching and use of the encyclopedia. It's not easy, but it can be done.
