The Hector Mine Earthquake, October 16, 1999At 2:46am local time, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck a remote area of the Mojave Desert, approximately 100 miles east of Los Angeles. Luckily for most people, the area is sparsely populated. Luckily for geologists, the quake passed through an area where the quake's motion left clear evidence!
