SuperKids' reviewers have looked at several new Reading Software programs in the past several months covering a broad spectrum of needs and ages, evaluating their content and design, as well as their kid appeal and ease of use.
Reader Rabbit's Complete Learn to Read System [for ages 3 to 7] from The Learning Company, actually teaches reading skills from letter recognition and letter sounds to phonics, words, sentences and eventually reading comprehension. The system requires parental involvement: if you don't have the time, consider: Reader Rabbit's Reading Ages 4-6 (reviewed as Reader Rabbit's Interactive Reading Journey), or Reader Rabbit's Reading 6-9 (reviewed as Interactive Reading Journey II).
Arthur’s Reading [for ages 4 to 7] from Creative Wonders is aimed at drilling the young reader in skills needed to become a successful reader. Lack of novel activities makes this one best for Arthur fans.
Mia: The Search for Grandma's Remedy [for ages 5 to 9] from Kutoka Kids, includes 9 learning activities designed to support school reading curriculum in kindergarten through grade two. Not recommended for kids with short attention spans, or kids who are easily frustrated.
JumpStart Reading for Second Graders [for ages 6 to 8] from Knowledge Adventure has a fun adventure theme with an Indiana Jones-like frog. It assumes prior basic reading skills, and offers good practice of Language Arts skills required of a 2nd grader.
