What is a Prime Number?

A prime number is an integer greater than one, whose only positive divisors are itself and one. For example, the number 7 has only one pair of factors (7,1).

Integers with additional positive divisors are called composite numbers. For example, the number 8 has two factor pairs (8,1) and (2,4).

Prime numbers are important in many aspects of math -- and in many aspects of the modern world. For example, the encryption systems used for secure Internet transactions make use of the fact that large numbers are exceptionally difficult and time consuming to factor.
