SuperKids' reviewers looked at six new Reading Software programs this month covering a broad spectrum of needs and ages, evaluating their content and design, as well as their kid appeal and ease of use. Which is best for your child?
Reading Success Test [for ages 5 to 9] from Virtual Knowledge, is a multimedia program that assesses a child’s mastery of reading fundamentals. Used in conjunction with other indicators, it provides a helpful, non-threatening way for concerned parents to assess their child’s reading progress.
Elmo's Reading [for ages 3 to 6] from Creative Wonders, is a two disc set that provides fun pre-reading skill building activities, and enjoyable read-along texts. Best for pre- and beginning readers.
Blue's ABC Time Activities [for ages 3 to 6] from Humongous, provides pre- and early readers with a low-key yet entertaining set of activities based on Nickelodeon's preschool television program "Blue’s Clues."
Leap into Phonics [for ages 3 to 7] from Bright Start, provides children with a good solid introduction to phonics. Not as flashy as Elmo's Reading, it is well suited for students distracted by fancy graphics, and for those needing extra help.
Reading Quest with Aladdin [for ages 7 to 10] from Disney Interactive, is a well-animated adventure story that requires the user to complete reading and spelling activities to progress. Good for skill development.
Ultimate Speed Reader for ages 14 and up] from Davidson provides a series of activities that train the reader to track more effectively, improve concentration and perception, and use peripheral vision to read more words at once. Good for for anyone motivated to improve reading speed and overall comprehension.
