John Glenn's Launch Vehicle -- Then and Now

The orbital flights of Project Mercury used a re-purposed ICBM, the Atlas missile, as the launch vehicle. Today's Space Shuttle uses a specially designed pair of solid fuel booster rockets combined with the shuttle's own three liquid fuel engines to reach orbit.
