Software for Girls
The Big Picture
As part of our ongoing series looking at programs designed primarily for girls, SuperKids' reviewers checked out the latest in this category, and found an increasing number of programs. Continuing the pattern we have seen in the past, most focus on "touchie-feelie" subjects, rather than classic academic disciplines.Read below for cameo descriptions and check out the comparison chart at the bottom of this page, then click on the titles that interest you to see what our parent, teacher, and kid reviewers had to say.
- Anne of Green Gables [ages 7 to adult] from Renaissance Interactive Studios, is based on the classic book of the same name. Better than a book on tape, it emphasizes the beauty of the written word, while making it come to life for the young student.
- Ariel’s Story Studio [ages 6 to 10] from Disney Interactive is a delightful interactive program that provides reading enrichment and creativity exercises.
- Clueless [ages 8 and up] from Mattel Media, is based on the TV show of the same name. Initially intriguing to our reviewers, our kid testers quickly tired of this program
- Crayola Magic Princess [ages 6 to 12] from IBM, allows girls to design and color outfits for princess figures, while they learn about four historical time periods. Perfect for the little girl who likes paper dolls and dreams of fairy tales.
- Imagina Digital Makeover [ages 9 and up] from Compucloz, is a digital dressing room program. Although a fun diversion, it lacks the depth needed to make it truly appealing to its targeted older-girl audience.
- Rockett's Tricky Decision [ages 8 to 12] from Purple Moon, is a sequel to Rockett's New School. In this chapter, the user roleplays whether it is better to go to a party with her friends, or one where all the 'cool' people are going.
- Secret Paths in the Forest [ages 8 to 12] from Purple Moon, invites students to visit a magical treehouse where girls much like themselves await, eager to share their innermost fears and desires. It provides a relaxing activity for girls to enjoy during their quiet, contemplative hours.
- Super Jewelry Kit [ages 7 to 13] from Printpaks, combines an animated paint-program with special printer paper and accessories to allow the user to create "super" jewelry. Although not terribly educational, a good bet for the craft enthusiast.
- Zero Zero [ages 8 and up] from Rhinestone, is an intriguingly designed interactive story set in turn-of-the-century Paris. With a refreshingly different look, and an off-beat style, our kid reviewers enjoyed this program.
