Proxy Parent Value
Marty is an interactive storybook that substitutes voice commands for mouse and keyboard inputs. This difference makes Marty at least initially intriguing to young children new to computers, or those unable to master the use of a mouse. For those who have figured out a mouse and keyboard, Marty's sound-activated features are a novelty. But as the novelty value wears off, the child discovers a rather small range of interactive potential, limiting the long-term usage of the program.
Parent Friendly
Because of the fickle nature of sound input calibration, this program can be frustrating at times. It wasn't always clear to our reiewers when the program really needed a voice input. Hence, some frustration at not being able to answer the "mommy, I can't make this work," type of questions.
Purchase Value
Marty is certainly entertaining, especially for the younger set. But it struck our reviewers as being only marginally more entertaining than a videotape. A child who is already familiar with other, more interactive animated storybooks would find this program a little too sedate.
